ANOINTING OF THE SICK
"By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ."
"Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders [presbyters] of the Church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven” [James 5:14-15]. Tradition has recognized in this rite one of the seven sacraments. - The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1499 & 1510.
In the event of a serious illness, an upcoming surgery, a change of condition for one who is chronically ill, or for those who are elderly, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be administered by one of the parish priests. Please call the parish office (949-249-4091) to make arrangements for this. This Sacrament can be administered at the church, in the hospital, at an assisted-living facility, or at the person’s home.
Also, a communal celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick occurs on one Sunday during the both the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent.
